Teide Nature Reserve

Teide National Park is the most visited attraction in Tenerife — and for good reason. It is a unique volcanic landscape, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where altitude, climate, vegetation and views combine to create an experience unlike anything else on the island.
In this post I’ll tell you what makes the Teide so special, what to do there, when to visit and how to get there in the best possible way.

What makes Teide National Park so special?

The Teide rises to 3,718 metres above sea level — the highest mountain in Spain and the third largest volcano in the world measured from its ocean base. The fact that it sits on a relatively small island in the middle of the Atlantic makes it truly extraordinary.

The landscape resembles the surface of the moon — a feeling of visiting another planet. The combination of altitude, extreme climate and endemic vegetation creates conditions that can only be found here, nowhere else in the world.

One of the most iconic elements of the park is the Tajinaste Rojo — a plant unique in the world that only grows in Tenerife. Its enormous red spikes bloom in spring, between May and June, and transform the volcanic landscape into something of extraordinary beauty.

In the winter months, the summit of the Teide is covered in white snow — while just 50 kilometres away, less than an hour’s drive, you’ll find a sunny beach. That climatic contradiction is one of the most surprising contrasts Tenerife has to offer.

One of the most characteristic sights of the reserve is the sea of clouds that forms between 1,000 and 1,500 metres altitude. From above, the Teide appears to emerge from an ocean of clouds beneath a deep blue sky — an image that stays with you forever.

Furthermore, the Roque Cinchado — a volcanic rock formation with striking shapes — is one of the most photographed landmarks in the park and one of those spots that surprises even those who already know the island well.

What to do in Teide National Park?

The main attraction is, of course, the ascent to the summit. However, the park offers many more experiences — from hiking and mountain biking to stargazing and observatory visits. Below I detail the most outstanding options.

Hiking Teide National Park Tenerife

Ascending the Teide — Available tours

Most visitors go up by cable car, which departs at 2,200 metres and reaches 3,555 metres. To reach the summit at 3,718 metres it is necessary to continue on foot with a special permit. For this reason I recommend booking the tour in advance — places are limited and sell out quickly.

Hiking and trails

In addition to the summit ascent, the park has a wide variety of hiking and mountain bike trails of different levels. Each area of the reserve offers a different landscape and microclimate — you could spend days walking and always find something new. It is recommended to go with a local guide who knows the less-travelled paths well.

Visitor centres and accommodation in the park

Inside the park there are two visitor centres worth knowing about. The first is the El Portillo Visitor Centre, located at the northern entrance to the park — a great starting point to get your bearings, learn about the flora and fauna of the Teide and plan your routes before heading in.
The second is the Cañada Blanca Visitor Centre, located next to the Parador de las Cañadas del Teide — one of the most special places to stay in Tenerife. Sleeping inside the national park, at over 2,000 metres above sea level, is a completely different experience. At night the silence is absolute and the starry sky is spectacular.
The Parador is especially popular among hiking enthusiasts — it allows you to get up early and tackle the trails before the visitor groups arrive, enjoying the park in complete tranquillity. If you are interested in hiking in the Teide, staying here is without doubt the best option.

Teide Observatory and astronomy

The Teide Observatory is one of the most important astrophysics centres in the world. Its high-altitude location, far from any light pollution, offers exceptional conditions for observing the night sky. The nights on the Teide are, literally, spectacular.
You can visit the observatory during the day or join one of the night-time astronomical observation excursions — a completely different and highly recommended experience.

When to visit Teide National Park?

The park can be visited throughout the year. However, the best times are winter and spring. In winter the summit is covered in snow — normally from late December to early March — and the contrast with the volcanic landscape is impressive. In spring the Tajinaste Rojo blooms and the park comes alive with colour.
In summer it is less pleasant to walk in the high mountain areas due to the heat. Therefore, at that time of year it is better to opt for the trails in the northern part of the park, which are more shaded and cooler. In any case, whenever you go up to the Teide make sure to bring warm clothing — the temperature at the summit is very different from the coast.

How to get to Teide National Park?

There are buses that go up to the park from various points on the island. Nevertheless, the best option is to go with a private car or with an organised tour with a guide. The reason is simple: flexibility. The park is vast and there are many special places that are difficult to find without knowing the routes well.
Moreover, the journey up to the park is an experience in itself — the viewpoints, the changes in vegetation and the views of the coast are all part of the visit. That is why I always recommend going with a local guide who knows the lesser-known corners and can tailor the route to your interests.
