Whales and dolphins in Tenerife

In particular, the Canary Islands and Tenerife are home to many species of whales and dolphins. Some migrate and others stay all year round. The most common species are a whale called ‘small fin router’ and a dolphin called ‘dolphin’.

The only way to see them is to sail on boats and yachts from which you can watch the whales and dolphins a few metres away, swimming at breathtaking speed in their natural environment and having fun in the clear, deep ocean waters close to the shore … .

In my opinion, the smaller safari yachts, designed for 10-12 passengers, are better because it is much more pleasant than embarking with another 100 passengers as on the larger yachts. On a small yacht, you have a private skipper who navigates the yacht to the areas where the dolphins and whales are found and swim close to the yacht, allowing you to observe these amazing mammals up close in their natural environment.

The experience of being on board a private yacht with a glass of champagne in your hand, surrounded by a clear blue sea with dolphins and whales is like being part of a Hollywood film that only here in Tenerife is a dream that can come true almost every day of the year.

In addition to dolphin and whale watching, it is also recommended to anchor in one of the bays for snorkelling and swimming. The water temperature is pleasant most months of the year. In the months of December-May the water temperature is the lowest and drops to 18 degrees Celsius. In other months of the year the water is warmer and reaches 25 degrees in summer. The water is clear all year round.

Most boats and yachts leave from Puerto Colón in Las Américas and there are some that leave from Los Gigantes and the port of Playa San Juan, all on the south coast of Tenerife.
